Class Description

Age Range: Middle School Schedule: Wednesdays, Fridays for 8 weeks Learning Goals: Book Studies: We will discuss author studies, figurative language, book vocabulary, parts of speech, chapter summaries, critical thinking, and short essays, like vignettes, etc. Booklist: 1. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne 2. The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling 3. Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express 4. Madeleine L'Engle "A Wrinke in Time" 5. The Fellowship of the Ring J.R.R. Tolkien 6. Wings of Fire Book One Tui T. Sutherland 7. Student voted choice Homework: Homework consists of chapter reading, chapter summaries, short essays, vocabulary study, and author research. Estimated time outside of class: 1-2 hours per week Assessment: Each student will be assessed on their participation in class and their preparedness with the required reading and journal writing. Students will be asked to participate in the class discussions and presentations of assignments. The teacher will give feedback on all work assignments and in-class participation Learner Supply List: The books listed above may be purchased online through any bookstore. Before a book begins, I will send a link and plenty of time to prepare for buying the needed books. Buying one book at a time is fine. Course Description: I use a lot of interaction in class through interactive slides and videos. I believe that class should be student-led conversations with guidance by the teacher. We learn from our peers as we delve into the book studies together. Additional Notes: A new 8-week session will be offered each quarter.
