Class Description

Age Range: 12+ Schedule: Starts the week of Aug 22, 2022 Ends the week of Nov 4, 2022 *This is a FLEX class - there are no live group meetings. Assignments are completed each week on your own schedule and submitted online by the due date.* Learning Goals: Students will understand the basic concepts of economy and while best suited for 8th/9th grade, anyone from 12+ could benefit. Estimated time per week: 1-2 hrs Assessment: Students will complete and submit online assignments to Canvas and receive grades/feedback. Learner Supply List: n/a Course Description: FI$H: How An Economy Grows is a curriculum that uses vibrant animation and storytelling to bring economic ideas to life. The show’s ten episodes tell the story of how three people on an island gradually develop an advanced economy. Characters Able, Baker, and Charlie discover key economic concepts such as capital and risk, comparative advantage, and money. There are 10 corresponding lecture videos. Topics covered: 1. Capital and Risk 2. Opportunity Costs 3. Interest and Debt 4. Money 5. Labor 6. Comparative Advantage 7. Seen and Unseen 8. Loans and Banking 9. Moral Hazard 10. Inflation One episode is covered each week. Students will watch the episode followed by the lecture video and then complete online assignments based on that week's lesson. There will be a final assessment to reinforce the learning. Additional Notes: Day/Time shown under schedule is only the start time.
